HANSJÖRG AUER

ALPINIST

Austrian Alpinist Hansjörg Auer embraced sports climbing, multi-pitch climbing, alpinism, and crack climbing from an early age. His accomplishments include a stunning 37-pitch slab on the Marmolada South Face in the Italian Dolomites, the first ascent of “Waiting for Godot” in Patagonia’s Torres del Paine, as well as the ascent of Kunyang Chhish East (7400m) in the Karakorum Mountains.

NOTES ON AN EPIC JOURNEY

“On the morning of August 8th, I embarked on my adventure with a few essentials: my small paraglider, a light paragliding harness, my climbing shoes, a jacket, a pair of thin gloves, a headband and my chalk bag.”

  • I began with the “Vinatzer/Messner” (800m/UIAA 6+) and reached Punta Rocca.

  • I then flew from the Marmolada Punta Rocca Summit and landed on the ski slope above Canazei.

  • I hiked across the Sella Mountain Range and started climbing the “Abramkante” (500m/UIAA 7-).

  • I took off for my second flight and reached the Rifugio Pisciadu. The strong wind did not allow me to fly any further than Corvara.

  • I was already tired when I started the long hike to reach the starting of my last climb.

  • The “Große Mauer” (300m/UIAA 7-) on the Sass dla Crusc Westface pushed me beyond my usual limits. I was very happy to reach my final destination, the Summit of Sass dla Crusc.
